Curls a Love/Hate Relationship

Naturally curly hair can be one of the hardest types of hair to maintain and control; hopefully with these hairdressing tips on the best Tools, Products and Techniques ~ I can help make styling and care easier for everyday wear.

Products for Curly Hair

Hydration is the key!!  All hair requires it own specific care management; with the correct techniques and products, taming your mane can be done with greater ease for everyday wear.

Shampoo
Hairstylists agree that when it comes to washing curly hair, less is definitely more. Shampoo as infrequently as possible: every other day if your hair is very fine; once a week if it's superthick. On days you don't wash it, just rinsing with water. And when you must lather up, use moisturizing products that contain ingredients like shea butter, palm oil, or avocado oil.
Product: Aveda Be Curly Shampoo it contains a blend of aloe and wheat protein that retracts around ringlets as they dry to help fight frizz

Conditioner
Give your curls a fighting chance against frizz by loading up on conditioner—twice. In the shower, slather on a rich conditioner that contains silicone (any ingredient that ends in "cone"); spread it on from roots to tips, leave it on for five minutes, and rinse thoroughly.
Turn tangles into tendrils with this whisper-light yet thorough curl-enhancing conditioner.

Then get ready for conditioner number two: Squeeze the water out of your hair, detangle with a wide-tooth comb, and apply a leave-in formula  starting an inch from the scalp and working it down to the tips. "Leave-in formulas deposit a uniform film of moisturizing polymers on the hair and create a humidity-resistant barrier," explains cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer.
Defines curls, detangles, hydrates, and prevents frizz

Treatment
Once a week treat your hair to a Nourishing mask ~ it only takes 10 minutes!! your hair will become silky soft and more manageable everyday.
It will Sumptuous plant butters and essential oils deeply nourish and strengthen, rejuvenating hair from within while minimizing breakage.

Top Tools for Curly hair

Some of these tools have been around like a cup of tea, but do you really know what they can do for you and how they help you maintain your locks?

Wide-Toothed Comb
This is textured hair 101 if you’re new to your natural hair. The teeth are spaced wide enough to allow the hair space to glide through. Slather on your favorite conditioner before you de-tangle!

Denman Brush
Some use it to de-tangle, some use it to “clump” and define their curls after using a gel. With different types to choose from, hair of every thickness and curl pattern should be able to find what works best for them.

Diffuser attachment
The majority of women own a hairdryer but how often is it used?? the diffuser is an add-on to your dryer that allows the hair to dry even quicker, as it distributes heat to gently dry your hair.

Hair pins
Bobby pins can be the quick savor to a fast up-style that doesn't require a lot of time. We like that!

Satin scarf/pillowcase
Even tossing and turning in our sheets can cause hair breakage in the long term! using a Satin pillow case can allow the hair to guide smoothly over the pillow case. Don't like the look?? Wrapping your hair in a scarf can have the same aid.

Processing cap (aka the shower cap)
For those deep conditioning sessions, wrap your hair up in a plastic shower cap. Your body heat will allow the product to soak even more into your hair!

Butterfly clips
Great for securing hair in sections, keeping it out of your way while you style! Adding product and styling in sections makes the whole process easier and ensures you don’t miss a spot!

What I truly love about Becks is that he's a trend setter ~ which means ~ he isn't afraid to try new things and he wears them with confidence! which is probably the main reason why they are accepted, loved, copied and worn!

Leighton Mester: blonde girl gone dark

The Gossip Girl star is actually a natural blonde, but when she auditioned for the role of Blair Waldorf she was asked to dye it brown (so as to not steal premiere blonde Blake Lively's thunder in the series!). Leighton is one of the people who looks much more intriguing and smouldering as a brunette, however this look is not for everyone. Darker shades can be harsh on face features, and bring more attention to the nose, eyes and skin.

There's a good side of dark hair, though! If you have fine hair, dying it dark can help it look more full, voluminous and healthy (vs dying it light, although not dying it at all is healthier).

If you're a natural blonde like Leighton and are thinking of going brunette, give Piers a call or PM him on his facebook page for free advice :)

Haute glamour: hair colour to blow your socks off

There is nothing like the power of a good hair cut and colour to make you feel a million dollars. If you've ever wondered how girls get that shiny, bright and glamorous hair colour, keep reading.

Hot hair. It starts with a warm base colour, perfectly matched to your skin tone to complement your complexion. Then a full, half or t-area of head is foiled in very thin strands placed strategically to brighten the whole look and add dimension. The trick is to choose highlights only a couple of tones lighter, so that they are not obvious. The end look is an overall glossy and lively hair colour without a "streaky" or "stripy" contrast.

1. Chestnut base and honey foils give an overall dark blonde look. 2. Light ash blonde with platinum highlights. 3.  Medium ashy brown with ash blonde highlights. 4. Golden brown with blonde highlights. 5. Medium ash blonde with light ash highlights.

Fringe benefits: we show you how

There's no better time than winter to transform your look; and catwalk trends are all pointing to sexy, smouldering fringes. Here's a guide to the celeb' looks to inspire you.

Bangs.  They aren't for everyone, but get the right type and they can transform your appearance and create a dramatic look. They suit many different style cuts - part of the trick is to get the colour right and pick a fringe that suits your face shape. Plus, you can always pull them back in a slight quiff with hair clips if you want a clear face.

How to: get Miranda Kerr's chignon

Hair styling may take a lot of years to master, but there are some pretty good tutorials out there to make things simple. Miranda Kerr recently sported this clean and easy chignon. To learn how to do it, follow these steps.

  1. Blow dry your hair upside down spraying lightly some volumising spray on the roots.
  2. Kink your hair slightly by back combing gently.
  3. Lie on your bed facing upwards with your head dangling from the edge to gather your hair up in a high ponytail - flatten the back of your hair with the brush as you gather the hair and keep your head tilted back as you do this (this will make it tight at the back).
  4. (Back on your feet) hold the end of your ponytail and gently twist it until it nearly turns back on itself, securing it with a headband.
  5. Secure a the hair in place with bobby pins.
  6. Lightly spray with hairspray to set. (Tip: hold the can at least 20cm away from your head)

Here's a really good tutorial on how to do this simple up-do:

Belle brunettes: go over to the dark side this winter!

It's not just a sexy and smouldering new look, if you've got naturally dark hair it may add shine and a new dimension by increasing richness colour. It will also be easier to maintain as the re-growth occurs. A well-chosen darker colour will also make your hair look healthier by giving it a thicker and denser look; even if you've had your hair bleached many times before. And what's best, if you keep it dark throughout the winter season, it will also help your hair get healthier because the process to maintain a dark colour does not involve bleaching - giving your hair a little respite.
